Season underway, as we go again in 2018

Footy is back and wasn’t it an awesome weekend with the AFLW final, as well as the opening round of the men’s AFL matches across the country. We are only one round in and the 2018 year looks like being an absolute cracking year.

AFLW Grand Final Cliff-Hanger

Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs played head to head in the AFLW Grand Final at Princes Park in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs ignored the controversy of captain Katie Brennan’s suspension to claim AFLW premiership with a tight one-goal victory over Brisbane. 19-year-old, rising star, Sophie Conway, kicked the opening goal of the 2018 AFLW Grand Final and she did not disappoint…

AFL Season Off to a Flying Start

Kicking off the mens, the 2018 Australian Football League Season is the 122nd season of the elite AFL competition.

Over the weekend, all 18 teams played an outstanding performance in round 1.

It was an entertaining first weekend of footy… to say the least!

#1 Pick Debutant, A Homecoming and an Unexpected Return

Brisbane Lions #1 Pick from the 2017 National Draft Cameron Rayner played his first game against the Saints at Etihad Stadium.

Gary Ablett made his playing return to the Cats, having spent the previous seven seasons at the Gold Coast, which was made all the more special with victory in a nail-biter at the MCG against the Demons.

Luke Hodge, made his Lions debut, having shocked the AFL world through coming out of a short-lived retirement. Hodge put in a strong performance on Saturday showing us all why he came out of retirement, mopping up across halfback to find the ball 25 times.

Veteran Crow to Miss One Week

Crow’s midfielder/forward, Richard Douglas, has copped a one-match ban after his encounter with Essendon Star, Zach Merrett, after leaving him concussed on Friday Night, responsible for engaging in rough conduct.

Blues on the Improve, Tigers Get The Job Done

Carlton supporters will be encouraged by their side’s performance against the reigning premiers, with a strong first quarter display against the Tigers on Thursday night.

The Blues were very impressive throughout the whole game and took it up to Richmond, however, Tigers showed they have not lost any of their tenacity and came through winning by four goals.

Record-Breaking Hawk Torments The Pies

Tom Mitchell racked up an impressive 54 disposals in the Hawks win over the Pies, breaking the all-time AFL/VFL record for touches in a match. Whilst doing so, he is also the first player to ever hit the 50-mark twice.

Is Tom going to go one better in 2018 and knock Dusty off in this year’s Brownlow?

We can’t wait to see how this plays out in 2018.

Giants Step Up in Season Opener

GWS delivered an absolute thrashing to the Western Bulldogs in round one, rumbling the opponents with an 82 point win. The Bulldogs will be looking to regather for round 2 against the West Coast Eagles this Sunday at Etihad.

After an exciting round one, the year looks set to be one of the most exciting yet.

Will Richmond maintain the edge?

Can Melbourne rise to be a contender in September?

Easter Weekend Footy can not come any sooner!

All of us at the Australian Rules Football Academy are super excited to be back in the best season of all… the footy season!!!

Who are you predicting to be premiers for season 2018?
